International regulations state that if you have radar on board your yacht, you must know how to use it. This course will teach you how to get the best out of your radar unit.

• Radar controls and function
  • Gain, FTC, Sea & Rain clutter controls
  • Range, Wakes & Expansion
• Radar screen presentation
  • North Up, Head up & Course up
  • Relative or true motion
• Conditions giving rise to abnormal propagation.
  • Radar wave propagation.
• Target detection, definition and discrimination
  • Radar beamwidth over distance
  • Radar range
• Radar reflectors
  • Passive and Active Radar reflectors
• Collision Avoidance
  • Plotting rules and techniques
  • Plotting Aids - Use of Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (MARPA), based on Raymarine C120.
  • AIS - Automatic Identification System (not part of the RYA syllabus, but we cover it)
• Use of Radar as a navigation aid.
• Accuracy and inaccuracies of radar.

At YachtCom we have a real Raymarine C120 navigation display unit which is used during the radar course.

We are familiar with the Raymarine (Raytheon) Pathfinder SL70 and C/E-Series of Radar and the JRC Radar 1000.

What to bring
If students have another type of Radar fitted to their yachts they are encouraged to bring along the manual.

Student numbers are kept to a maximum of 6 students per course, so early booking is advised.
